Sierra Northern Railway, based in West Sacramento, California, has acquired locomotive builder RailPower LLC to advance its hydrogen and low-emission motive power initiatives. RailPower, known for producing 190 locomotives including hybrid switchers and genset locomotives, will now contribute its expertise to Sierra Northern's development of hydrogen-powered locomotives. Sierra Northern intends to integrate RailPower's hybrid innovations with its existing knowledge in hydrogen technology. The company plans to utilize RailPower's platform to manufacture hydrogen locomotives, with an initial focus on replacing the 260 locomotives currently used by shortline railroads in California. The hydrogen project of Sierra Northern has garnered support from the California Energy Commission and the California State Transportation Agency. Aside from its operations in three locations and providing switching services in Concord and Sacramento, Sierra Northern is also the principal owner of Sierra Energy Corp., which has pioneered waste-to-clean-hydrogen gasification technology.
