Asia Zero Emission Community Pledges Joint Efforts for Decarbonization
Key Ideas
- Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) members, including Japan and Southeast Asian countries, agree to collaborate on decarbonization efforts.
- The group aims to promote the shift to hydrogen and ammonia for thermal power generation, as well as develop sustainable aviation fuel and biofuel supply chains.
- Japan plans to share its expertise in hydrogen, ammonia, and energy-saving technologies with other Asian countries to further the decarbonization agenda.
- The joint statement emphasizes cooperation in electric power, transportation, industry, and the introduction of renewable energy for industrial parks.
The Asia Zero Emission Community, consisting of 11 member countries such as Japan, Southeast Asian nations, and Australia, recently met in Indonesia to discuss decarbonization strategies. The ministerial meeting, attended by Japan's Economy, Trade, and Industry Minister Saito Ken, resulted in a joint statement affirming their commitment to decarbonization. The members agreed to consider each country's unique factors in promoting decarbonization across electric power, transportation, and industry sectors. Notably, the countries aim to transition from carbon-emitting fuels to hydrogen and ammonia for thermal power generation, while also collaborating on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and biofuel supply chains. Additionally, they plan to enhance renewable energy adoption and energy efficiency in industrial parks. Japan intends to share its expertise in hydrogen, ammonia, and energy-saving technologies to support other Asian countries in their decarbonization efforts, fostering a spirit of cooperation and knowledge exchange among the AZEC members.
