Adani Mundra Cluster: Leading the Green Hydrogen Revolution in South Asia
Key Ideas
  • Adani Group's Mundra Cluster has joined the World Economic Forum's 'Transitioning Industrial Clusters' initiative to drive decarbonization and become a green hydrogen hub by 2050.
  • The initiative aims to foster collaboration, align visions, and pioneer innovative approaches towards decarbonization, focusing on hard-to-abate sectors in the Indian economy.
  • By leveraging Gujarat's renewable energy capacity, the cluster plans to become one of South Asia's leading green hydrogen hubs, with ambitious targets for green hydrogen production and net-zero emissions.
  • The Adani Mundra Cluster's integrated value chain will include significant capacities for solar modules, wind turbines, electrolyzers, and green hydrogen derivatives to solidify its position in the green energy transition.
Three Adani group firms, including Adani New Industries Ltd, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), and Ambuja Cements Ltd, have joined the World Economic Forum's 'Transitioning Industrial Clusters' initiative to form the Adani Mundra Cluster. This cluster aims to collaborate with global industry peers to drive economic growth, employment generation, and decarbonization by 2050. The Adani Mundra Cluster is set to become an integrated green hydrogen manufacturing hub, focusing on reducing India's dependency on energy imports and decarbonizing challenging sectors of the economy. With a commitment to achieve net-zero emissions as early as 2040, the cluster plans to power all port operations with renewable electricity by 2025. The upcoming Ambuja unit in Mundra aims to be a low-emission-intensity cement production facility, aligning with the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. By tapping into Gujarat's renewable energy capacity, the cluster plans to produce one million tonnes per annum of green hydrogen by 2030, expanding up to 3 million tonnes by 2040. The cluster will integrate 10 GW of solar modules, 5 GW of wind turbines, and 5 GW of electrolyzer manufacturing capacity to support its green hydrogen production. Additionally, the cluster will produce green hydrogen derivatives like ammonia to further establish its leadership in the green energy transition.
