BPCL and KPIT Technologies Partner for Hydrogen Mobility in Kerala
Key Ideas
  • BPCL and KPIT Technologies sign MoU to promote hydrogen-based mobility in Kerala.
  • Initiative involves establishing Hydrogen Refuelling Stations in Kochi and Trivandrum for pilot projects.
  • Project aims to gather data on fuel cell buses' performance in varying climatic conditions to support future deployment.
  • BPCL to deploy locally developed alkaline electrolyser for hydrogen production, while KPIT Technologies contributes fuel cell-powered bus.
Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and KPIT Technologies have joined forces to enhance hydrogen-based mobility in Kerala. Through a Memorandum of Understanding signed at the Global Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Summit in Kochi, the collaboration aims to promote sustainable public transport initiatives. The project, part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, involves setting up Hydrogen Refuelling Stations (HRS) in Kochi and Trivandrum to support pilot mobility projects. This partnership aligns with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, focusing on integrating indigenous technologies to build a robust hydrogen ecosystem. The initiative will see BPCL utilizing a locally developed alkaline electrolyser for hydrogen production, with KPIT Technologies providing an indigenously designed fuel cell-powered bus for the project. The initiative marks a significant step towards transitioning to hydrogen as a clean and efficient fuel for public transport. By gathering essential data on fuel cell buses' performance in Kerala's diverse climatic conditions, including high humidity and heavy rainfall, the project aims to enhance the reliability of fuel cell technology. BPCL's Hydrogen Refuelling Stations will ensure high-purity green hydrogen for the buses, promoting sustainability. The initiative not only focuses on operational reliability and durability of indigenous fuel cell stacks but also evaluates the feasibility of fleet operations with passengers. This collaboration signifies a progressive move towards a hydrogen-powered transportation future in India.
