India and Saudi Arabia have embarked on a significant collaborative initiative to connect their power grids through undersea cables across the Arabian Sea. This project, initiated in 2023 with a memorandum of understanding, aims to enhance the exchange of electricity and improve the balance between supply and demand. The partnership includes provisions for sharing electricity during peak periods, joint project development, production of green/clean hydrogen and renewable energy, and establishing secure supply chains for materials used in these sectors. By transitioning India from a net importer of Saudi oil and LPG to an energy exporter with a focus on renewable energy and hydrogen, this collaboration marks a significant shift in energy dynamics. The initiative also aligns with Prime Minister Modi's 'One Sun, One World, One Grid' vision, introduced in 2018, which envisions a global interconnected grid for transferring renewable energy between nations to achieve energy sustainability. By incorporating renewable resources like solar, wind, and hydro energy into interconnected grids, countries can effectively manage supply and demand fluctuations, enhance grid stability, and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Currently, India shares electricity with neighboring countries like Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Myanmar, and this new initiative with Saudi Arabia represents a step towards a more sustainable and interconnected energy future.
