India's Road Transport and Highways Minister, Nitin Gadkari, delivered a speech at the Green Bharat Summit in New Delhi, outlining the potential of waste as a valuable resource for road construction and energy generation. He stressed the importance of utilizing waste materials in infrastructure projects to reduce India's reliance on imported bitumen and combat air pollution, which is significantly contributed to by the transport sector. Gadkari also expressed optimism about green fuels like ethanol and methanol, foreseeing an increase in their usage along with the introduction of flex-engine vehicles. Green hydrogen emerged as a focal point in his address, with Gadkari highlighting it as a transformative fuel to alleviate pollution in the transport sector and achieve energy self-sufficiency. He reiterated India's commitment to carbon neutrality by 2070 and underlined the significance of reducing the cost of green hydrogen production. Gadkari mentioned research advancements, particularly by IISc Bengaluru, in biomass utilization to lower the cost of green hydrogen, showcasing innovative approaches to achieve self-reliance in energy production.
