Toyota, in collaboration with Mazda and Subaru, is deviating from the electric vehicle trend to work on a new line of engines designed for exceptional thermal efficiency. These engines, set to run on petrol, bio-diesel, and hydrogen, are seen as a potential game-changer by Toyota's CTO, suggesting a possible shift away from electric vehicles. Toyota's 'multi-pathway approach' towards carbon neutrality includes a focus on hydrogen technology alongside electric vehicles, hybrids, and traditional internal combustion engines. The introduction of three new engines by Toyota, including 1.5L NA, 1.5L turbo, and 2.0L turbo units, is geared towards meeting Euro 7 emission standards by mid-2027. These engines, developed using hydrogen-powered race cars, exhibit a remarkable improvement in thermal efficiency, translating to 40% better fuel efficiency compared to current engines, with a target of achieving 60% efficiency. Looking ahead, Toyota plans to launch more hybrid models in India, with the Fortuner mild-hybrid expected by the end of 2024. Additionally, the company is working on an electric Urban SUV concept based on the Maruti eVX, slated for release in 2025. These initiatives underscore Toyota's commitment to innovation and sustainability in the automotive industry.
