Australasian Partnership Paves the Way for First Hydrogen-Powered Flight
Key Ideas
  • An Australasian consortium, including Fabrum and Ara Ake, is developing liquid hydrogen tanks and fuel systems for Stralis Aircraft's hydrogen-powered fixed-wing aeroplane.
  • Fabrum's hydrogen liquefier enables the on-site production of liquid hydrogen for testing the tanks and fuel system, promoting the advancement of hydrogen-powered flight.
  • The partnership showcases the commitment to innovation in the aviation industry, with a focus on lightweight composite tanks and fuel systems for future hydrogen-powered aircraft.
  • Despite challenges faced by liquid hydrogen aviators, such as financial struggles experienced by Universal Hydrogen, the consortium remains optimistic about the potential of hydrogen in aviation.
An Australasian consortium, consisting of Fabrum and Ara Ake, has embarked on a project to develop a liquid hydrogen tank and fuel system for what is expected to be the region's first hydrogen-powered flight. Working in partnership with Stralis Aircraft, Fabrum will provide the necessary tanks and fuel systems, while Stralis will deliver the hydrogen-electric propulsion systems integrated with Fabrum's technology. Christopher Boyle, Managing Director of Fabrum, expressed excitement about the project, highlighting the significance of their hydrogen liquefier in producing liquid hydrogen for testing purposes. This development aligns with the recent launch of Fabrum's liquid hydrogen testing facility at Christchurch Airport, focusing on various hydrogen-related technologies. Despite recent setbacks in the industry, such as the financial difficulties faced by Universal Hydrogen, the consortium remains optimistic about the potential of hydrogen in aviation and is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of innovation in the flight industry.
