Charbone and ABB to Develop Green Hydrogen Facilities in North America
Key Ideas
- Charbone Hydrogen Corporation and ABB will collaborate on up to 15 green hydrogen production facilities in North America, starting with a project in Québec, Canada.
- The flagship Sorel-Tracy facility will be powered by hydroelectricity, initially producing approximately 400kg of hydrogen with potential for future expansion.
- ABB will provide design, engineering, and support for interconnecting production facilities and local utilities, aiming to increase energy efficiency and reliability.
- Charbone aims to support the decarbonisation of industry through rapid project implementation and modular approaches to hydrogen production.
Charbone Hydrogen Corporation and ABB have announced a collaboration to develop green hydrogen production facilities in North America, with a focus on a flagship project in Québec, Canada. The Memorandum of Understanding outlines the joint development of up to 15 facilities over the next five years. The Sorel-Tracy facility, to be connected to the Hydro-Québec grid by Q2 2025, will use hydroelectricity to power two electrolysers, initially aiming to produce 400kg of hydrogen. Future projects may follow a similar scale. Additionally, a production facility will be established in the greater Detroit area, a key manufacturing hub. ABB will lead the design, engineering, and supply of electrical substations for interconnection, while also supporting standardisation of engineering for increased efficiency and reliability. The company may also serve as the main contractor for automation, electrification, and telecom depending on project needs. Charbone aims to accelerate the decarbonisation of industry through fast project implementation and modular production approaches.
