DEWA's Green Hydrogen Project: A Step Towards Sustainable Energy Future
Key Ideas
  • DEWA in collaboration with Expo 2020 Dubai and Siemens Energy has produced 90 tonnes of green hydrogen since May 2021, leading to over 1 GWh of clean energy and a reduction of 450 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
  • The project, generating 20 kg of hydrogen per hour using solar energy with storage capacity for up to 12 hours, showcases a sustainable energy model with a hydrogen gas motor producing electricity even at night.
  • Aligned with UAE's goal to secure 25% of the low-carbon hydrogen market, DEWA's initiative supports national strategies aiming to achieve 100% energy production from clean sources by 2050.
  • DEWA's upcoming 2.5 MW alkaline electrolyser project, scheduled for completion by 2024, further underlines the commitment towards green hydrogen production for a cleaner and sustainable future.
The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has made significant strides in green hydrogen production through its project launched in May 2021 in partnership with Expo 2020 Dubai and Siemens Energy. Since its inception, DEWA has generated approximately 90 tonnes of green hydrogen, which has been utilized to produce over one gigawatt hour (GWh) of clean energy, resulting in a reduction of around 450 tonnes of CO2 emissions. The project operates by producing 20 kg of hydrogen per hour using solar energy and has a storage capacity of up to 12 hours, allowing for continuous power generation including during the night. DEWA's green hydrogen project not only contributes to reducing carbon emissions but also supports the UAE's ambition to capture a significant share, specifically 25%, of the low-carbon hydrogen market. The initiative is in line with various national strategies such as the National Hydrogen Strategy, the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, all aimed at achieving a complete transition to clean energy sources by 2050. In furtherance of its commitment to green hydrogen, DEWA issued a tender for a 2.5-megawatt (MW) alkaline electrolyser project in August 2024. This project, scheduled for completion by the end of 2024, is a crucial step in enhancing the capacity for green hydrogen production. The overall efforts by DEWA indicate a positive and proactive approach towards sustainable energy practices and align with the broader goals of transitioning towards a greener and more environmentally friendly future.
