Indonesia is making significant strides towards decarbonizing its crucial maritime sector by embracing green hydrogen technology. A groundbreaking collaboration was revealed at the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit held on April 15, 2025. The partnership involves PT HDF Energy Indonesia, a subsidiary of French hydrogen expert HDF Energy, joining forces with Indonesia's Transportation Ministry, state-owned electricity giant PT PLN, and ferry operator PT ASDP to conduct a comprehensive study on utilizing locally produced green hydrogen to power the nation's water transport networks. This strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) underscores Indonesia's dedication to achieving its ambitious net-zero emissions target by 2060 with a particular emphasis on revolutionizing the energy landscape of its extensive maritime and ferry transport networks. The move aligns perfectly with Indonesia's Net Zero Emission Roadmap for the Energy Sector and the recently launched National Hydrogen Roadmap, both of which highlight the transportation sector, especially maritime transport, as a critical area for deploying hydrogen technologies. The joint study will receive significant support and co-funding from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), underscoring the global importance of this initiative. Initial efforts will concentrate on Eastern Indonesia, a region renowned for its renewable energy resources and strategic ferry routes operated by PT ASDP. This area is the focal point for HDF Energy's ambitious plans to establish 23 Renewstable® hydrogen power plants, potentially amounting to a US$2.3 billion investment. The landmark MoU was officially signed by key representatives from each organization, including prominent figures from the Ministry of Transportation, PT PLN (Persero), PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry, PT Pelayaran Bahtera Adhiguna, and HDF Energy. The Director of Shipping and Seafarer of the Ministry of Transportation expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, highlighting the Ministry's involvement in a study on retrofitting ships into hybrid hydrogen and battery system vessels selected under the IMO GreenVoyage2050 Accelerator Project. The Director of the Technical Cooperation and Implementation Division at the IMO commended Indonesia's efforts in exploring clean energy pathways for shipping, emphasizing how national leadership and multi-stakeholder collaboration are essential for progress towards a zero-emission maritime future. This initiative sets a significant precedent for utilizing green hydrogen in Indonesia's maritime sector, showcasing a positive step towards sustainable and environmentally friendly transport solutions.
