In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable aviation, the City of Oulu in Finland has partnered with French energy company Verso Energy to establish a hydrogen processing plant in Oulu's port area. This collaboration aims to propel Oulu to the forefront of hydrogen innovation in the Nordic region and represents a significant milestone in Finland's transition towards green energy solutions. The plant, projected to be the largest in Finland, is designed to produce 80,000 tonnes of e-SAF (sustainable aviation fuel) annually, demonstrating a substantial €1.4 billion investment and the creation of 250 job opportunities. Verso Energy, renowned for its expertise in synthetic fuels, particularly for aircraft and maritime transportation, is expanding its reach internationally with the Oulu project. By addressing the increasing demand for cleaner fuel alternatives in these sectors, including EU regulations mandating a 2% blend of SAF in airport fuel, the Oulu plant is poised to play a pivotal role in meeting this growing need. Notably, Finland currently lacks any sustainable aviation fuel production facilities, further underscoring the importance of this venture. The cooperation agreement between Verso Energy and the City of Oulu signifies the city's proactive support for the initiative by streamlining zoning procedures in the Port of Oulu's green transition industrial area. This efficient collaboration, as highlighted by Marko Kilpeläinen, Director of Urban Environment Services for Oulu, sets Oulu apart with its flexible and expedited project development processes compared to other regions. The agreement, valid until 2026, lays the groundwork for the implementation agreement, detailing investments and responsibilities of both parties. Mayor Ari Alatossava of Oulu expressed his contentment with the project's advancement, emphasizing the city's crucial role in embracing sustainability.
