Tata Motors has taken a pioneering step in India's transportation sector by launching the first-ever trials of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks. The trial phase, planned for up to 24 months, will involve testing 16 advanced hydrogen trucks equipped with Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2-ICE) and Fuel Cell (H2-FCEV) technologies on major freight corridors in cities like Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, and others. This initiative, driven by Tata Motors' aim for sustainable and efficient transportation solutions, focuses on evaluating the feasibility and performance of hydrogen technologies for long-haul transportation. The Executive Director of Tata Motors, Girish Wagh, highlighted the importance of exploring hydrogen as a viable technology for heavy-duty transportation, emphasizing the need for real-life feedback and understanding of deployment possibilities. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has awarded Tata Motors the tender for this trial run under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi commended Tata Motors' initiative, recognizing hydrogen as the fuel of the future with immense potential to reduce emissions and enhance energy self-reliance in India's transportation sector. They emphasized that this trial signifies a significant step towards decarbonizing the transportation sector and achieving energy independence, aligning with global climate goals.
