Humboldt County's First Hydrogen-Powered Bus: Pioneering Sustainable Transportation
Key Ideas
  • Humboldt County is set to receive its first hydrogen-powered bus as part of a larger initiative to transition to sustainable transportation.
  • Funded by a $38.7 million grant from the California State Transportation Agency, the Humboldt Transit Authority is leading the way in adopting hydrogen buses.
  • The newly developed bus, capable of traveling 400 miles on a single refuel, marks a significant advancement in energy efficiency compared to traditional hydrogen and electric buses.
  • With plans to convert all 16 buses to hydrogen-powered models within three years, Humboldt County is making strides towards a cleaner and greener public transit system.
After years of planning and development, Humboldt County is on the brink of welcoming its first hydrogen-powered bus, a milestone in sustainable transportation. This initiative, spearheaded by the Humboldt Transit Authority (HTA), was made possible by a substantial $38.7 million grant from the California State Transportation Agency. The collaboration with Canadian bus manufacturer New Flyer led to the creation of a cutting-edge bus capable of traveling 400 miles without the need for refueling, surpassing the range of traditional hydrogen and electric buses. Despite supply chain challenges delaying the delivery, the HTA remains committed to transitioning its entire fleet to hydrogen-powered models. This transition aligns with California's goal to phase out carbon-emitting buses by 2029, with HTA aiming to achieve at least 25% carbon-free buses by next year. Additionally, the hydrogen fueling station at the bus depot will be open for public use, promoting the adoption of hydrogen-powered vehicles in the region. General Manager Gregg Pratt expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, highlighting Humboldt County's pioneering role in embracing hydrogen technology for sustainable public transit.
