Air Liquide to Invest €80m in Hydrogen Plant at TotalEnergies' La Mède Facility
Key Ideas
  • Air Liquide plans to invest €80m in building a hydrogen plant at TotalEnergies' La Mède facility, using recycled biogenic by-products to produce hydrogen and reduce CO₂ emissions.
  • The project aims to support the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and contribute to TotalEnergies' decarbonisation objectives.
  • The new hydrogen production unit is expected to be operational in 2028 and will help establish a renewable hydrogen ecosystem in the Fos-sur-Mer industrial area.
  • This initiative aligns with Air Liquide's strategy of providing decarbonisation solutions like CO₂ capture and low-carbon hydrogen to support sustainability efforts.
Air Liquide has announced an €80m investment to construct and operate a hydrogen plant at TotalEnergies' La Mède facility in Fos-sur-Mer, France. The plant, set to be operational by 2028, will utilize recycled biogenic by-products for hydrogen production, leading to the avoidance of around 130,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. The primary purpose of the hydrogen produced will be to facilitate the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), aligning with TotalEnergies' decarbonisation goals. This project not only supports the decarbonisation of the La Mède biorefinery but also aims to establish a new renewable hydrogen ecosystem in the industrial basin of Fos-sur-Mer. Air Liquide's strategic investment falls in line with its objective of offering customers various decarbonisation solutions, including CO₂ capture and low-carbon hydrogen. Furthermore, the initiative is aligned with the European Commission's regulations on sustainable aviation fuel, emphasizing the shift towards greener energy sources in the aviation industry. The investment signifies a positive step towards achieving carbon neutrality and fostering sustainability in the energy sector.
