Mexican cement giant Cemex is making strides in sustainable operations by planning to implement plasma-based hydrogen production technology at its Rugby plant in the UK. The move is part of the company's strategy to reduce CO2 emissions, with the initial deployment of HiiROC's innovative hydrogen production unit. Cemex Ventures, the investment arm of the company, has shown support for UK hydrogen technology startup HiiROC through strategic investments. HiiROC's Thermal Plasma Electrolysis (TPE) technology is highlighted for its energy efficiency, using only a fraction of the electricity needed in conventional water electrolysis methods. The process involves utilizing plasma torches to extract hydrogen and carbon from feedstocks like methane, with subsequent refining for various applications. Tim Davies, co-founder and CEO of HiiROC, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration with Cemex, emphasizing the significance of utilizing clean and scalable production units in industries striving to decarbonize. Additionally, a recent partnership between HiiROC and Siemens through a Memorandum of Understanding aims to leverage Siemens' automation capabilities to enhance hydrogen production from TPE technology.
