Industry leaders in the UK's clean energy sector have revealed a new strategic plan to empower the workforce for the growing hydrogen industry. The Hydrogen Skills Alliance (HSA) has launched 'Empowering The Future: A Strategic Skills Plan for the UK Hydrogen Economy' to address skills development challenges in the hydrogen sector. The plan proposes the establishment of a national Hydrogen Skills Academy to provide specialized training for local workforces, anticipating a surge in hydrogen-related jobs from 1,600 to 29,000 by 2030. Over 50 organizations are part of the HSA, collaboratively focusing on bridging skills gaps and fostering innovation in the hydrogen sector. Hydrogen is recognized as a crucial energy source in the UK's clean energy goals, offering a clean alternative to fossil fuels and aiding in emissions reduction. The plan emphasizes the need for a skilled workforce to meet the target of 10GW output by 2030, requiring approximately 28,675 direct jobs and 63,800 indirect roles. Challenges include a lack of comprehensive workforce data and shortages of trained staff, prompting the HSA to advocate for a strategic skills action plan for coordinated intervention. The plan calls for national leadership to ensure training capacities meet the sector's demands, paving the way for a sustainable hydrogen future in the UK.
