TotalEnergies' Green Hydrogen Initiative in Morocco: Project Chbika
Key Ideas
- TotalEnergies signs land reservation contract in Morocco for the Chbika project, focusing on green hydrogen production using solar and wind power.
- The initiative aims to produce 200,000 tons of green ammonia annually for the European market, enhancing Morocco's renewable energy exports.
- TE H2 and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners lead the project, envisioning a future green hydrogen production center in Morocco.
- Morocco's strategic ambitions in green hydrogen align with the project, aiming to diversify energy sources and boost its position in global green energy markets.
The French group TotalEnergies has announced a significant step in the green hydrogen sector by signing a preliminary land reservation contract with Morocco for the 'Chbika' project. This initiative, located in the Guelmin-Oued Noun region on Morocco's southern Atlantic coast, focuses on utilizing 1 GW of solar and onshore wind power to produce green hydrogen through seawater electrolysis. The project, unveiled during French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to Rabat, aims to strengthen energy ties between Morocco and Europe.
TotalEnergies, alongside partners TE H2 and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, plans to develop facilities for solar, wind, and hydrogen production. The project targets an annual production of 200,000 tons of green ammonia for European markets, aligning with Morocco's strategy to leverage renewable resources for green energy export.
By paving the way for a future large-scale green hydrogen production center, TotalEnergies seeks to position Morocco as a key player in the Mediterranean's energy transition. This collaboration not only enhances Morocco's green hydrogen ambitions but also opens doors for new export and industrialization opportunities in the green energy sector. Through foreign investment and renewable capacity development, Morocco aims to diversify its energy mix and integrate into global green energy production circuits.
