CityBus in Lafayette, Indiana, has been awarded a $10.5 million federal grant from the Federal Transit Administration to further its investment in hydrogen fuel cell buses and necessary infrastructure upgrades. This grant is part of a larger initiative by the FTA to improve public transportation across the United States. The CEO of CityBus, Bryan D. Smith, expressed enthusiasm about the grant, highlighting the organization's dedication to providing environmentally friendly transit services to the Greater Lafayette community. The funding will support the development of hydrogen refueling stations and modifications to maintenance facilities to accommodate the new buses. Additionally, workforce training programs for CityBus employees will be implemented. The first batch of hydrogen fuel cell buses is expected to be operational by spring 2025. These buses were purchased through a grant awarded in June 2023. CityBus is also preparing its administrative facility for the arrival of the new buses. Bryan Walck, the manager of customer experience, explained that hydrogen fueling stations work differently from electric battery buses, requiring fewer stations to fuel multiple buses.
