DB ESG, a prominent provider of rolling stock engineering solutions, has received funding from InnovateUK to explore the impact of hydrogen addition and carbon capture on exhaust emissions of a locomotive engine. The initiative is part of the 'Contracts for Innovation: International Rail Innovation Challenges' competition by the Department for Business and Trade. DB ESG will collaborate with Advanced Hydrogen Technologies (AHT) to trial a hydrogen supply device on a Class 66 locomotive. The project aims to bring economic and environmental benefits, with a focus on decarbonizing the rail sector amidst the presence of over 5,000 active diesel engines in the UK. James Hornsby, Projects Director of DB ESG, highlights the importance of meeting carbon emission targets in the sector. AHT's CEO, Ben Kattenhorn, emphasizes the system's ability to reduce carbon footprint and fuel costs, showcasing its success in road applications and its potential in the rail industry.
