Minister Ekperikpe Ekpo of Nigeria's Ministry of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas) spoke at the Nigerian International Energy Summit in Abuja, highlighting the transformative progress in the gas sector under President Bola Tinubu's administration. Ekpo emphasized the importance of adopting Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to reduce transportation costs and promote energy sustainability. The government's nationwide CNG programme, with a target of converting over 100,000 vehicles and a significant investment in CNG infrastructure, aims to provide environmentally friendly alternatives to petrol and diesel. Collaboration between the government, NNPC, and private sector partners has led to the establishment of mini LNG plants to drive industrialization and economic growth. The Decade of Gas initiative, spearheaded by Ekpo, focuses on infrastructure expansion, increased domestic utilization, and export growth to position Nigeria as a leading gas-powered economy by 2030. Despite challenges like the reluctance to convert vehicles to CNG due to a lack of refueling stations and limited CNG stations nationwide, Minister Ekpo remains optimistic about the role of gas in Nigeria's future prosperity.
