Sacramento Regional Transit Embraces Hydrogen-Powered Buses and Infrastructure Upgrade
Key Ideas
  • Sacramento Regional Transit to invest in 29 hydrogen fuel cell powered buses and 29 full cell electric buses to replace natural gas-burning buses by 2028.
  • Plans include building the first hydrogen facility in the region and upgrading the McClellan Business Park bus maintenance facility to accommodate new buses and support future zero-emission vehicles.
  • An investment will also be made in training to ensure proper maintenance and operation of the new zero-emission platforms.
  • The project is funded by $76.8 million in federal funding, along with $25.2 million in state and local funds, totaling $102 million.
Sacramento Regional Transit (SacRT) is embarking on a significant investment in its bus operations to transition to zero-emission vehicles. With a substantial grant of $76.8 million from the federal government and an additional $25.2 million from state and local sources, SacRT is set to undertake three major projects. The aim is to convert the bus fleet in northern Sacramento to zero-emission by 2028. As part of this initiative, SacRT will procure 29 hydrogen fuel cell powered buses and 29 full cell electric buses to replace the current natural gas-burning buses. In addition to acquiring these advanced vehicles, SacRT plans to construct the region's first hydrogen facility to support the operations of the new buses. Furthermore, the McClellan Business Park bus maintenance facility will undergo a redesign to cater to the maintenance needs of the hydrogen-powered and future zero-emission vehicles. The upgraded facility will feature six bus maintenance bays, an operations control center, a hydrogen fueling center, and the capacity to accommodate 125 buses. To ensure the success of this transition, SacRT will invest in training programs to equip staff with the necessary skills for maintaining and operating the new zero-emission platforms effectively. This comprehensive project underscores SacRT's commitment to environmental sustainability and modernizing its public transportation infrastructure. The total funding of $102 million will drive these transformative efforts, marking a significant step towards a greener and more efficient public transport system in Sacramento.
