Pure Hydrogen has entered a significant agreement with the City of Newcastle to provide a hydrogen fuel cell waste collection truck fueled by green hydrogen, a zero-carbon energy source derived from water electrolysis and renewable electricity. Scott Brown, Pure Hydrogen's manager, expressed the company's leadership in the emerging hydrogen economy and the growing presence in Australia's waste management sector through key partnerships. The City of Newcastle aims to achieve net-zero emissions from its fleet and equipment, leading to a 12-month trial with the hydrogen-powered truck and potential future replacements of diesel trucks. The lease agreement aligns with the city's commitment to a net-zero carbon footprint and showcases a proactive approach to sustainability. Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes emphasized the importance of zero-emissions vehicles in the city's environmental goals and praised the trial as a step towards a more sustainable future. Pure will provide the hydrogen separately and receive a deposit plus rental payments. Beyond waste collection vehicles, the company has other hydrogen vehicle projects, including the Taurus Prime Mover with PepsiCo, with updates expected in the Australian market in the latter half of 2024.
