The European Commission has announced a substantial investment of €422 million in 39 innovative projects dedicated to advancing alternative fuel infrastructure through the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF). These projects will focus on various initiatives such as developing hydrogen refueling stations, onshore power installations in ports, electrifying airports, and establishing infrastructure for alternative fuels like ammonia and methanol for shipping purposes. Additionally, the projects will include the installation of public electric recharging stations, including high-power megawatt chargers for heavy-duty and light-duty vehicles. The significant investment reflects the EU's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing air quality, and strengthening the competitiveness of European industries. This move is in line with the EU's clean energy and sustainability objectives, aiming to drive the transition to cleaner transport. Apostolos Tzitzikostas, Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, emphasized that the supported projects will accelerate the deployment of critical recharging and refueling infrastructure necessary for expanding zero-emission fleets. The projects will add nearly 5,000 new charging points, including 626 megawatt chargers, encouraging citizens to opt for zero-emission vehicles and contribute to a cleaner environment. AFIF plays a crucial role in expanding alternative fuel supply infrastructure across the EU's trans-European transport network. Its activities are in alignment with the FuelEU Maritime and ReFuelEU Aviation regulations, which are targeted at decarbonizing the maritime and aviation sectors. The facility operates through a continuous call for proposals, with a budget of approximately €578 million available for successful proposals in the upcoming evaluation round in June 2025, enabling the funding of new and innovative projects throughout the year.
