HyTerra, an Australian start-up, is gearing up to commence its exploration campaign under the Nemaha Project in Kansas, US, to search for natural hydrogen. Previous reports have shown high concentrations of hydrogen and up to 3% helium in the area, prompting the company to initiate its stage I exploration program. This program involves drilling two consecutive wells in April 2025 with the option for a third well. The 12-month exploration plan focuses on conducting geological surveys, collecting data, and evaluating subsurface hydrogen and helium concentrations. Natural hydrogen, created through natural processes inside the Earth's crust, is seen as a promising energy source due to its low-cost and low-impact nature. HyTerra's Permit to Drill, received last summer, has paved the way for this exploration endeavor. Additionally, the company has garnered interest from Australian iron ore major Fortescue, which has acquired a significant stake in HyTerra. The extraction of natural hydrogen is still in its early stages, with proponents suggesting the application of existing oil and gas extraction technologies. Notably, helium, often found alongside natural hydrogen, holds immense value in industries like MRI machines and semiconductor production. HyTerra's drilling campaign aims to analyze the reservoir's characteristics while focusing on both hydrogen and helium gases, marking a crucial milestone in their exploration journey.
