India's National Green Hydrogen Mission: Accelerating Hydrogen-Powered Transport
Key Ideas
  • The Indian Government has initiated five pilot projects for hydrogen-fuelled buses and trucks to propel the adoption of hydrogen technology in the transport sector.
  • Leading industry players like TATA Motors, Reliance Industries, and NTPC are involved in the projects, which include 37 hydrogen-powered vehicles and nine refuelling stations.
  • The National Green Hydrogen Mission, with a financial outlay of ₹19,744 crore up to FY 2029-30, aims to establish commercially viable hydrogen-powered transport solutions and reduce reliance on fossil fuel imports.
  • The pilots are set to be commissioned in 18-24 months, driving the large-scale adoption of hydrogen technology in India and positioning the country as a global leader in Green Hydrogen technology.
The Indian Government has kicked off five pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission to explore the use of hydrogen in buses and trucks. These projects, aimed at advancing hydrogen technology in the transport sector, involve industry giants like TATA Motors, Reliance Industries, and NTPC. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) spearheaded this initiative by issuing guidelines and inviting proposals for hydrogen-based vehicles, routes, and refuelling stations. The projects, totaling 37 hydrogen-powered vehicles and nine refuelling stations, will be deployed across ten routes, including major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad. The main goal of these pilot projects is to assess the viability and efficiency of hydrogen-powered transport solutions, develop necessary infrastructure, and promote economic feasibility. With a substantial financial backing of ₹208 crore from the Government of India, these projects are expected to pave the way for a significant shift towards hydrogen technology in the transport sector. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in January 2023 with a budget of ₹19,744 crore until FY 2029-30, is a crucial step towards India's clean energy transition and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. By positioning India as a global leader in Green Hydrogen technology, these initiatives align with the country's commitment to sustainable energy practices and environmental conservation.
