India's National Green Hydrogen Mission: Pilot Projects with Tata Motors and RIL
Key Ideas
- The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy initiated five pilot projects involving Tata Motors, RIL, and others to test hydrogen-powered buses and trucks.
- These projects include 37 vehicles and 9 refuelling stations, with a total financial support of around ₹208 crore from the Centre.
- The aim is to develop commercially viable hydrogen technologies for transport, assess their effectiveness, and pave the way for scaling up such technologies in India.
- The projects will support the deployment of green hydrogen as fuel in buses and trucks, focusing on safety, technical feasibility, and economic viability.
The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy in India announced five pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission involving Tata Motors, Reliance Industries (RIL), and other key players in the transport sector. These projects aim to test run buses and trucks powered by hydrogen, focusing on developing commercially viable technologies and supporting infrastructure like hydrogen refuelling stations. The total financial support for the projects is estimated to be around ₹208 crore. The vehicles will run on ten routes across India, with the projects likely to be commissioned in the next 18-24 months. State-run entities such as NTPC, ANERT, HPCL, BPCL, and IOCL are also part of these projects. The objectives include supporting the deployment of green hydrogen in buses and trucks, assessing the effectiveness of hydrogen-based vehicles, and evaluating their economic viability under real-world conditions. The projects aim to showcase safe operations, technical feasibility, and performance of hydrogen technologies in the transport sector.
