The Indian government has taken a significant step towards promoting the use of hydrogen in the transportation sector by initiating five pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. These projects, which involve the deployment of 37 vehicles and 9 hydrogen refuelling stations, aim to test the feasibility and effectiveness of hydrogen fuel cell-based and internal combustion engine-based vehicles on various routes across the country. Companies like TATA Motors, Reliance Industries, and others are actively participating in these projects, supported by a total financial assistance of approximately Rs 208 crore from the government. The focus of these projects is to develop commercially viable hydrogen technologies for buses and trucks, with a goal to eventually scale up green hydrogen adoption in the Indian transport sector. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, initiated with a substantial budget of Rs 19,744 crore, envisions a sustainable future by promoting the use of green hydrogen as a fuel in public transport, thereby contributing to environmental conservation and reducing carbon emissions.
