Innovative Partnership for Clean Hydrogen Production from Wastewater Biogas
Key Ideas
  • Utility Global and Hanwha Corporation partner on a pre-FEED study to deploy H2Gen system at South Korean wastewater treatment plants for clean hydrogen production.
  • The collaboration aims to utilize biogas from wastewater facilities to produce high-purity hydrogen for South Korea's hydrogen-powered mobility sector and other clean energy applications.
  • Utility's H2Gen system can produce low-to-negative carbon intensity hydrogen from various biogases without electricity, contributing to cost-effective decarbonization and reducing carbon capture costs.
  • The partnership is a significant step in Utility's global expansion plans and Hanwha's journey towards eco-friendly energy policies and efficient resource utilization through green infrastructure development.
U.S.-based hydrogen company Utility Global and Hanwha Corporation E&C Division from South Korea have joined forces to explore clean hydrogen production from biogas obtained from wastewater treatment plants. The collaboration involves conducting a preliminary study to implement Utility Global's proprietary H2Gen system at wastewater treatment facilities in South Korea. By utilizing biogas as a feedstock, the companies aim to evaluate the feasibility of establishing a hydrogen production plant to supply the South Korean hydrogen-powered mobility sector and other clean energy applications. The H2Gen technology is designed to generate high-purity hydrogen using various biogases and industrial off-gases, without the need for electricity, contributing to practical decarbonization and cost-effective operations. Utility Global highlighted that the system also simplifies carbon capture by producing a concentrated CO2 stream. CEO Parker Meeks expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, emphasizing its role in expanding the H2Gen system globally and promoting the sustainable production of clean hydrogen. The collaboration was praised by Vladimir Novak, Utility's Chief Commercial Officer, who sees it as a crucial step in Utility's penetration of major hydrogen markets worldwide. Hanwha Corporation's Joon Myoung Lee highlighted the importance of utilizing biogas for hydrogen production to align with eco-friendly energy policies and enhance resource efficiency, showcasing the partnership's contribution to environmentally conscious infrastructure development.
