Loganair, the largest regional airline in the UK, has unveiled its plans to lead the industry in adopting hydrogen-fuelled flights, with a goal to launch the world's first commercial flight powered by hydrogen within the next five years. The airline has identified short-haul routes from Orkney as ideal for hydrogen-powered services, utilizing Kirkwall Airport as a test site to explore the implementation of hydrogen infrastructure in Scottish airports. This initiative is part of the UK Civil Aviation Authority's 'Hydrogen Challenge', aimed at advancing hydrogen fuel operations, with Loganair collaborating with various partners to build capacity for hydrogen-powered flights in the north of Scotland. Loganair is also engaged in sustainability projects beyond hydrogen, such as working on hybrid-electric aircraft with Heart Aerospace and planning for a hydrogen-electric aircraft with Cranfield Aerospace Solutions by 2027. Transport Scotland has underscored the importance of hydrogen fuel by setting the ambitious target of potentially replacing all current aircraft on specific routes in the Highlands and Islands with hydrogen or electric aircraft by 2040, reflecting the increasing focus on hydrogen power in Scotland's aviation industry.
