Singapore and Australia Fund Eight Green Maritime Projects for Emission Reduction
Key Ideas
  • Singapore and Australia commit $10 million each to fund eight projects aiming to reduce emissions in maritime operations.
  • Projects include developing hydrogen from seawater, electrifying vessels, and promoting safe adoption of low-emission fuels.
  • Initiative led by Australia's CSIRO and Singapore's MPA as part of the Australia-Singapore Green and Digital Shipping Corridor.
  • Selected projects focus on deploying low or zero-emission technologies for maritime and port operations within two years.
Singapore and Australia have jointly selected eight projects to receive funding with the aim of reducing emissions in maritime operations. This initiative, under the Australia-Singapore Initiative on Low-Emissions Technologies (Aslet), has a total commitment of S$20 million. The projects, set for completion within two years, focus on deploying low or zero-emission technologies for maritime and port operations. These include developing hydrogen from seawater, electrifying vessels, and promoting the safe adoption of low-emission fuels. The selected projects cover various aspects such as fuel supply chains for hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol, as well as vessel electrification and safety monitoring. The projects aim to support the Singapore-Australia Green and Digital Shipping Corridor, which was established to decarbonize and digitize shipping routes between the two countries. Funded by both governments, the initiative aims to accelerate the transition towards cleaner maritime operations. The projects selected include innovations such as a fully electric ferry, a cloud-based digital analysis tool, and a safety and training program for ammonia usage. These projects are expected to contribute significantly to the reduction of emissions and the promotion of sustainable practices in the maritime industry.
