Uruguay is currently seeking bids until January 27 for green hydrogen-related consulting work as part of its effort to develop a strategic environmental evaluation process for associated projects. The country's green hydrogen and derivatives roadmap sets ambitious targets, aiming for domestic production of 1Mt/y by 2040. Achieving this goal will necessitate the installation of 18GW of renewables capacity and 9GW of electrolyzers. One of the key opportunities for Uruguay lies in the sustainable aviation fuel market, leveraging its access to biogenic carbon dioxide and a highly decarbonized power grid. The energy ministry has highlighted four land-based e-fuels projects in development, including HIF's US$6bn Paysandú project for e-methanol export, Enertrag's US$628mn Tambor project also for e-methanol export, and projects by Kahiros and H24U focusing on hydrogen for the local heavy transport sector. Additionally, several solar PV plants planned for Paysandú, with references to 'green fuel' producers in their documentation, have entered the environmental review system.
