The recent election victory of Western Australia's Labor Party, led by Premier Roger Cook, has paved the way for the implementation of one of the country's most generous household battery rebates. With a substantial majority in the lower house, Labor's win promises a strong stance on renewables, including a $387 million Residential Battery Scheme offering rebates of up to $5,000 per household on the main grid and $7,500 for regional Horizon Power grid. The focus on underwriting 200 MWh of small-scale storage is aimed at supporting the integration of excess rooftop solar energy into the grid and facilitating the closure of coal-fired power generators by the end of the decade. While progress has been made with significant big battery projects, there remains a crucial need for additional large-scale wind and solar projects to meet renewable energy targets and ensure a smooth transition away from coal. Although the state and federal governments have set ambitious goals for new wind and solar capacity by the end of the decade, challenges persist in transforming these plans into concrete actions. The future lies in expanding renewable energy capacity and fostering a sustainable energy landscape in Western Australia, with a particular emphasis on harnessing the potential of wind and solar resources for green power generation.
