Wood to Lead FEED Study for EET Hydrogen Fuel Switching Project in the UK
Key Ideas
  • Wood will conduct a FEED study for EET Fuels' Hydrogen Fuel Switching project in the UK, leading to a final investment decision in 2025.
  • The project aims to enable safe hydrogen combustion in a unique crude distiller furnace at Stanlow Refinery, reducing emissions by 0.2 million tonnes annually.
  • EET Hydrogen is also progressing on a 1,000MW hydrogen production project, demonstrating a commitment to low-carbon energy and UK industrial growth.
  • The acquisition of Thornton Science Park signals EET's focus on building an innovative hydrogen hub, contributing to the energy transition and UK energy security.
EET Fuels has enlisted Wood to oversee the front-end engineering design (FEED) study for its Hydrogen Fuel Switching project in the UK. This study is crucial for making a final investment decision on the initiative in 2025. Wood's responsibilities include coordinating the design of the fuel system for EET's hydrogen-ready crude distiller furnace and re-designing core infrastructure and control systems for safe hydrogen combustion. The project at Stanlow Refinery is groundbreaking as it will facilitate running on 100% hydrogen or a fuel-gas mix, significantly reducing emissions by 0.2 million tonnes per year. EET Hydrogen is also moving forward with its HPP2 production project, expected to have a capacity of 1,000MW and produce approximately 230,000 tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen annually. Deepak Maheshwari, CEO of EET Fuels, emphasized the company's ambition to become the world's first low-carbon process refinery, ensuring fuel supply security and supporting employment in the UK's industrial regions. Martin Simmonite, Wood's Senior Vice-President for UK Operations, highlighted the project's importance in the energy transition and UK energy security. Moreover, EET's recent acquisition of Thornton Science Park is part of its strategy to establish a leading-edge transition hub focusing on hydrogen fuel technologies. This initiative underscores EET's commitment to innovation, sustainable practices, and contributing to the UK's energy landscape. The developments by EET and Wood demonstrate significant progress towards a greener future and sustainable energy solutions.
