Costain has been chosen by Wales & West Utilities to spearhead an investigation into integrating hydrogen refuelling stations into the UK's current gas network. This research study, backed by Ofgem, is designed to assess the potential of utilizing the existing gas network for hydrogen refuelling infrastructure, with a focus on enhancing the practicality of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV). Under WWU's HyDrive initiative, Costain researchers will engage with key regional stakeholders to analyze transport demands, forecast future network requirements, and pinpoint suitable locations for petrol station conversions. Matthew Hindle, WWU's Head of Net Zero and Sustainability, highlighted the importance of establishing permanent hydrogen refuelling infrastructure following successful trials with a hydrogen van. The initiative aims to address the deficiency of hydrogen refuelling stations not only in their region but nationwide, contributing to the industry's journey towards Net Zero. Laura Hughes, Energy Sector Director at Costain, emphasized the company's expertise in handling hydrogen safely, ensuring the study produces practical insights to drive sustainable implementation and impactful outcomes.
