German energy company VNG AG and its subsidiary, along with Dutch hydrogen company HyCC, are collaborating on the GreenRoot project in Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Germany. The initiative involves establishing a 500MW electrolyser to generate around 50,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, aiding in the decarbonization of local industries. Positioned at the former waterworks of Wittenberg, the project supports efforts to shift energy supplies from fossil fuels to green hydrogen, benefitting SKW Piesteritz and potentially other industrial clients in the region. The project plans to integrate with the German hydrogen network and explore heat delivery to local utilities, showcasing a holistic approach to sustainable energy solutions. With consultations starting in 2025 and operations projected for 2029, the partners stress the importance of favorable economic conditions and regulations to ensure the project's success. Advocating for regulatory flexibility and financial support for green hydrogen, the partners aim to strengthen the hydrogen market and promote sustainable value creation in the Central Germany region. HyCC, a joint venture of Macquarie's Green Investment Group and Nobian, brings extensive electrolysis expertise to the project, focusing on decarbonizing challenging sectors.
