A new renewable energy facility has been announced in Lincoln, United States, that aims to convert landfill methane gas into renewable natural gas (RNG). The facility, located at the Bluff Road Landfill, will utilize 1,500 standard cubic feet of methane per minute to produce 4 megawatts of electricity, equivalent to powering 4,300 houses annually. The project, a public-private partnership between the City of Lincoln and Sparq Renewables, is set to commence in December and is projected to be completed by winter 2026 at a cost of nearly $50 million. The City will receive a share of the RNG sales, anticipating over $96 million in revenue over the 25-year contract. City leaders express that the initiative will improve Lincoln's air quality, enhance landfill operations' efficiency, and reduce local greenhouse gas emissions. The project not only transforms harmful waste into a valuable asset but also contributes to the economic and environmental progress of the city. The biogas facility will also aid in subsidizing landfill maintenance and is expected to reduce emissions equivalent to 92 million gallons of gasoline over its lifespan. Sparq Renewables CEO, Norman Herrera, highlights the potential for revenue generation from RNG and hints at future ventures in CO2 markets, hydrogen, and sustainable aviation fuels using landfill gas. The project showcases how sustainability innovations can drive economic growth, reduce emissions, improve city health, and provide revenue for essential waste management services.
