The European Commission has given the green light to a €400 million State aid scheme in Spain to support the production of renewable hydrogen. This initiative, part of the European Hydrogen Bank's 'Auctions-as-a-Service' tool, aims to accelerate the decarbonization of EU industry and reduce dependence on Russian fossil fuels. The scheme will help build 345 MW of electrolyzer capacity, producing 221,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen and avoiding up to one million tonnes of CO2 emissions. Spain's national objective of 12 GW of electrolyzer capacity by 2030 will also be supported, along with targets for renewable fuel consumption set by the EU. The aid will be granted through a competitive bidding process and will be tied to the amount of renewable hydrogen produced, ensuring compliance with EU standards. This effort is part of the broader Innovation Fund mechanism where Member States can allocate funding to renewable hydrogen projects. Spain's participation in this scheme aligns with its commitment to renewable energy and sustainability goals.
