BMW is set to introduce the electric iX5 internationally in 2026, followed by the hydrogen-powered iX5 in 2028, developed in collaboration with Toyota. The fuel cells for these vehicles are sourced from Toyota and are hand-assembled at a dedicated hydrogen center in Munich, Germany. The hydrogen iX5 boasts a strong performance of 401hp and a range of up to 504km, thanks to a combination of a fuel cell and a lithium-ion battery. The vehicle accelerates from 0-100kph in less than 6 seconds, emphasizing both power and efficiency. Hydrogen vehicles offer quick refueling times of 3-4 minutes at designated stations, providing a cleaner alternative compared to traditional fueling options. The move towards hydrogen technology showcases BMW's commitment to sustainability and innovation, alongside their existing petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid drivetrains. While an India launch is uncertain due to the lack of hydrogen infrastructure, BMW aims to expand its fuel cell options across its range by the end of the decade.
