  • The initiative targets the copper industry to provide emission-free transportation of copper concentrates, aligning with the growing demand for carbon-free supply chains.
A groundbreaking project aiming to develop shipboard ammonia-cracking technology for zero-emission maritime transport has made notable progress. Class societies ABS and DNV, in collaboration with Norway-based Pherousa Shipping and technology company Metacon, have granted Approval in Principle for the innovative technology without encountering any significant obstacles, positioning it closer to realizing a zero-emission dry bulk carrier for the copper industry. The technology, centered around ammonia cracking to harness hydrogen energy for powering larger vessels, eliminates the need for carbon fuel primers and offers a fully electrical propulsion plant solution using PEM Fuel Cells. This approach is seen as a crucial step towards achieving full decarbonization in the maritime industry by leveraging the efficiency of ammonia cracking. Pherousa's concept, working under an exclusive license agreement with Metacon, is designed to be versatile in its applications, including supplying hydrogen to PEM Fuel Cells and various engine types, with the potential to fit onboard different vessel categories. The focus on the copper industry stems from the strategic importance of the commodity for emerging markets involved in decarbonization efforts. With a successful prototype demonstration and collaboration with major copper miners to design emission-free vessels for transporting copper concentrates, Pherousa is gearing up for global deployment of its innovative solution. The company's transition from concept to scale-up signifies a pivotal moment in the journey towards establishing a sustainable and zero-emission maritime transport system.
