India's National Green Hydrogen Mission: Driving Towards Clean Transportation
Key Ideas
- The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in India has allocated Rs 208 crore for pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission for deploying hydrogen-powered buses and trucks on ten routes.
- The projects, based on recommendations from ARAI and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, will include 37 vehicles and nine hydrogen refueling stations.
- Policy measures such as long-term ISTS waiver, duty benefits under SEZ Act, and exemptions from ALMM/RLMM requirements are being introduced to support the green hydrogen ecosystem and reduce fossil fuel dependency.
- The government's steps aim to boost the adoption of green hydrogen in the transportation sector and pave the way for a cleaner, more sustainable future in India.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in India has approved Rs 208 crore for pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission to introduce hydrogen-powered buses and trucks on ten specified routes. The projects, sanctioned based on recommendations from the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, will involve a total of 37 vehicles and nine hydrogen refueling stations. The vehicles will operate on routes such as Greater Noida–Delhi–Agra, Bhubaneshwar–Konark–Puri, and Pune–Mumbai, among others.
The Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Shripad Yesso Naik, confirmed the allocation of funds for these pilot projects, emphasizing the government's commitment to green initiatives. Additionally, various policy measures have been implemented to support the green hydrogen ecosystem, including waivers on ISTS charges for green hydrogen or green ammonia plants commissioned by 2030 and duty benefits under the SEZ Act for renewable energy equipment. Exemptions from ALMM/RLMM requirements have also been granted for renewable energy plants supplying power exclusively for production of Green Hydrogen. These initiatives aim to accelerate the adoption of green hydrogen in the transport sector and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, aligning with India's sustainable development goals.
