Walmart Canada has launched its first hydrogen fuel cell electric semi-truck in Mississauga, Ontario, as part of its plan to transition to a 100% alternatively powered fleet. The Nikola Hydrogen Fuel Cell EV Class 8 tractor, with a range of approximately 800 kilometers, is set to reduce 97 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually. This initiative makes Walmart Canada the first major retailer in Canada to introduce a hydrogen fuel cell electric semi-truck. The truck, sourced from ITD Industries Inc., will be used for longer-haul trips in Ontario, expanding the range of the current electric fleet. Gonzalo Gebara, Walmart Canada's president and CEO, highlighted this introduction as a significant step towards their goal of becoming a regenerative company. The collaboration with Nikola reflects Walmart's commitment to sustainability and innovation in transportation, positioning them as leaders in embracing new technologies for a sustainable future.
