Aussies Develop Futuristic Hydrogen-Powered Airplane for Transport Innovation
Key Ideas
  • Deakin University in Australia is partnering with AMSL Aero to develop Vertiia, a hydrogen-powered small passenger airplane with impressive specifications.
  • Hydrogen fuel cells have potential applications in passenger, medical, light freight transport, and military drones due to their efficiency and quick refueling times.
  • Despite challenges like environmentally friendly hydrogen production and infrastructure, companies like Hyundai and others globally are actively developing hydrogen fuel cell vehicles for various purposes.
  • While the road to commercialization for fuel cell electric vehicles is long, the technology's zero emissions, quiet operation, and quick refueling provide strong incentives for further development.
The development of hydrogen fuel cells for transportation purposes is ongoing, with Deakin University in Australia partnering with AMSL Aero to create Vertiia, a small passenger airplane powered by hydrogen fuel cells. Vertiia features a futuristic box-wing design with eight propellers that can be angled, allowing for vertical take-off and landing (VTOL). The aircraft boasts a 1000-kilometer range, 300 km/h speed, 500 kg payload capacity, 10-minute refueling time, and low sound levels at 65 to 70 decibels. Test flights for Vertiia have already been successfully conducted. Despite challenges in environmentally friendly hydrogen production and infrastructure, companies like Hyundai are actively working on hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Hyundai produces the NEXO passenger car, the Mighty light-duty truck, and the XCIENT heavy lorry. Additionally, globally, various companies including major players like Toyota, Honda, BMW, and General Motors, are developing hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles. In the aviation sector, companies like ZeroAvia, Universal Hydrogen, and others are working on hydrogen-powered aircraft. While the commercialization of fuel cell electric vehicles is still a work in progress, the technology offers zero emissions, quiet operation, and quick refueling times, making it an attractive option for the future of transport innovation.
