The City of Oulu in Finland and Verso Energy from France have collaborated to establish a hydrogen processing plant in Oulu with an annual production capacity of 80,000 tonnes of e-SAF. The project, valued at €1.4 billion, aims to create 250 jobs and solidify Oulu's position as a key hydrogen hub in the Nordics. Verso Energy's CEO, Antoine Huard, expressed confidence in Oulu's potential to produce emission-free aviation fuel efficiently. The plant will be the largest of its kind in Finland and one of Verso Energy's initial projects abroad. Their synthetic fuel production will rely on renewable hydrogen production and biogenic CO2 capture, catering to both aircraft and ships. The agreement facilitates planning and permitting for Verso Energy while the city progresses with zonal regulations. The partnership also paves the way for a future implementation agreement to detail investments and responsibilities. The cooperative effort involves multiple stakeholders, demonstrating Oulu's appeal for green transition investments. The agreement was formalized at the Northern Power business forum, attended by 450 hydrogen industry professionals.
