INERATEC, a Germany-based e-fuel company, has secured a €70 million funding package from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and Breakthrough Energy Catalyst to develop Europe's first large-scale e-fuel plant in Frankfurt. The investment includes a €30 million grant from Breakthrough Energy Catalyst and a €40 million venture-debt-loan from EIB, supporting the production of carbon-neutral e-fuels and further research and development. INERATEC's e-fuels aim to comply with EU regulations requiring synthetic aviation fuel to decarbonize the aviation industry. The e-fuel production process utilizes CO2 and hydrogen to create synthetic fuels and chemicals that are close to carbon neutral when utilized, especially in hard-to-decarbonize sectors like aviation. The long-term market growth for e-sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) and e-fuels is expected due to their potential in meeting regulatory demands. INERATEC's Frankfurt plant, set to open in 2025, will produce up to 2,500 tons of e-fuels and e-chemicals, including e-SAF, supporting the EU's aviation fuel mandate. The funding from EIB and Breakthrough Energy Catalyst signifies confidence in INERATEC's technology, positioning it as a key player in advancing sustainable e-fuel production. INERATEC's CEO emphasized that the Frankfurt plant will demonstrate the scalability of e-fuel production, showcasing its viability as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. The collaboration between INERATEC, EIB, and Breakthrough Energy Catalyst is seen as a significant step towards decarbonizing the aviation sector and achieving a competitive net-zero economy.
