Industrial gases company Air Liquide and TotalEnergies have announced a joint investment of €150 million to produce renewable hydrogen at the La Mède biorefinery in southeast France. This move is part of TotalEnergies' strategy to decarbonize its European refineries. The partnership will see Air Liquide constructing and operating a hydrogen production unit at La Mède using steam methane reforming, with an expected annual capacity of 25,000 tons. The renewable hydrogen will be utilized at the biorefinery to produce biodiesel and sustainable aviation fuel. TotalEnergies anticipates the new unit to commence production in 2028, contributing to the decarbonization efforts of the Provence-Alpes-Côte-D’azur region. Additionally, TotalEnergies and Air Liquide are collaborating on the Masshyli green hydrogen project with Engie, aiming for a 10,000 tons annual capacity. If approvals are obtained, the project plans to commence operation with a 20-megawatt electrolyzer in 2029, further bolstering the green hydrogen production in the region.
