Doosan Fuel Cell Company Ltd is making strides in the South Korean bus market through its commercial vehicle subsidiary HyAxiom Motors, which has developed two hydrogen fuel cell (FCEV)-powered bus models currently undergoing certification processes. Established by Doosan Fuel Cell's US subsidiary in 2022, HyAxiom Motors is poised to become the second automaker producing hydrogen-powered buses in South Korea after Hyundai Motor Group. The company is awaiting certification for two 11-metre bus models, including a low-floor city bus and a high-floor inter-city model, from the South Korean Ministry of Environment and the Korea Gas Safety Corporation. South Korea's Ministry of Environment is providing substantial subsidies to facilitate the transition of the country's bus fleet to FCEVs, with a target of introducing 21,000 units by 2030 and 2,000 FCEV bus sales by 2025. The automotive industry views FCEVs as a viable alternative to battery electric vehicles, particularly for larger commercial vehicles, given their extended range of over 500 km and the ability to refuel at traditional gas stations equipped with hydrogen storage systems. The expansion of Doosan into the FCEV bus market aligns with South Korea's objectives to decrease carbon emissions and reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels.
