India's National Green Hydrogen Mission: Pilot Projects for Hydrogen-Powered Vehicles and Refuelling Stations
Key Ideas
  • The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy in India has sanctioned five pilot projects for hydrogen-powered buses and trucks, involving major companies like TATA Motors and Reliance Industries.
  • These projects aim to deploy 37 vehicles and nine hydrogen refuelling stations across ten different routes in India.
  • State-run entities like NTPC and HPCL are also part of these projects, which have a total financial support of around ₹208 crore from the Centre.
  • The National Green Hydrogen Mission focuses on developing commercially viable hydrogen technologies for the transportation sector, with a phased deployment strategy to assess feasibility and economic viability.
The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy in India has announced the approval of five pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, aimed at introducing hydrogen-powered buses and trucks in the country. Major companies like TATA Motors, Reliance Industries, and Ashok Leyland are participating in these projects, which will involve a total of 37 vehicles, including 15 hydrogen fuel cell-based and 22 hydrogen internal combustion engine-based vehicles. Moreover, nine hydrogen refuelling stations will be set up along ten routes across India to support the deployment of these vehicles. The projects, led by the Ministry, have also attracted the involvement of state-run entities like NTPC, HPCL, and BPCL. These entities will contribute to the successful implementation of the pilot projects, which have received financial support amounting to approximately ₹208 crore from the Centre. The timeline for the completion of these projects is estimated to be within the next 18-24 months, aiming to pave the way for the widespread adoption of hydrogen technologies in the Indian transportation sector. The primary focus of these pilot projects is to develop commercially viable technologies for utilizing hydrogen as a fuel in buses and trucks. By supporting the deployment of Green Hydrogen in a phased manner, the projects aim to assess the safety, effectiveness, technical feasibility, and economic viability of hydrogen-based vehicles and refuelling stations. This initiative is crucial in validating the performance of hydrogen technologies under real-world operational conditions, ultimately driving innovation and sustainability in India's transportation sector.
