NCTD's Green Transformation: Hydrogen Fueling Station Groundbreaking in Oceanside
Key Ideas
  • North County Transit District (NCTD) is celebrating the groundbreaking of a hydrogen fueling station in Oceanside to support its transition to zero-emission operations for the BREEZE bus fleet.
  • The project, funded by the Federal Transit Administration and California Energy Commission, will enable NCTD to fuel its hydrogen fuel-cell electric buses, reducing greenhouse gases and improving air quality.
  • Rep. Mike Levin secured funding for the station, emphasizing the positive impact on sustainability and transportation networks in North County and San Diego.
  • NCTD plans to complete construction by summer 2025 and deploy hydrogen buses on BREEZE routes, contributing to a cleaner, quieter, and more sustainable public transportation system.
The North County Transit District (NCTD) in Oceanside, California, celebrated the groundbreaking of a hydrogen fueling station as part of its initiative to transition the BREEZE bus fleet to zero-emission operations. The station, located at the West Bus Division, will have the capacity to fuel hydrogen fuel-cell electric buses, constituting a significant portion of NCTD's fleet by 2025. NCTD aims to eventually convert its entire BREEZE fleet to zero emissions by 2040. Funding from the Federal Transit Administration's Low- or NoEmission Vehicle grant program will support the purchase of hydrogen fuel-cell electric buses and battery-electric buses, as well as workforce training initiatives in collaboration with Palomar College. The total project cost for the hydrogen fueling station amounts to approximately $8 million, with financial support from Rep. Mike Levin and the California Energy Commission. The completion of the station is expected by summer 2025, after which NCTD plans to introduce hydrogen buses on BREEZE routes originating from the West Division facility, serving various cities and communities in the area. NCTD Board Chair Jewel Edson expressed excitement about the transition to cleaner and quieter zero-emission hydrogen buses, highlighting the positive impact on air quality and service reliability. NCTD CEO Shawn M. Donaghy emphasized the importance of the hydrogen infrastructure for achieving zero-emission operations, expressing gratitude for the support received from government entities and outlining the district's vision for a sustainable transportation future. Overall, the project symbolizes a significant step towards a greener public transportation system, with the deployment of hydrogen buses set to enhance environmental sustainability and contribute to a more efficient and cleaner transport network in the region.
