South Korea Unveils Comprehensive Plan to Boost EV and Hydrogen Vehicle Infrastructure
Key Ideas
  • South Korea introduces medium-speed EV chargers in public places to cater to longer stays, addressing the gap between fast and slow chargers.
  • The government plans to invest in 4,400 new fast chargers in high-demand areas by 2025 and deploy mobile chargers in residential zones with limited parking.
  • Initiatives include increasing subsidies for EV purchases, revising regulations for PHEVs, separating EV ownership from battery ownership, and updating driver's license test criteria to reflect EV features.
  • For hydrogen vehicles, the government aims to double high-capacity hydrogen charging stations, transition 25% of intercity buses to hydrogen power by 2030, and increase hydrogen fuel subsidies with extended discounted natural gas prices for hydrogen production.
The South Korean government has unveiled new measures to enhance the competitiveness of eco-friendly vehicles and secondary batteries. A key focus is to expand EV charging infrastructure and extend highway toll discounts for electric and hydrogen vehicles. To address the limitation of existing chargers, the government plans to introduce medium-speed EV chargers in public places where people typically stay for 2-3 hours. Additionally, there will be investments in 4,400 new fast chargers by 2025, with the deployment of mobile chargers in densely populated residential areas lacking parking space. Subsidies for EV purchases will continue, including increased subsidies for young adults and multi-child families. The government also aims to separate EV ownership from battery ownership to reduce initial costs. For hydrogen vehicles, there are plans to double high-capacity hydrogen charging stations, shift 25% of intercity buses to hydrogen power by 2030, and enhance hydrogen fuel subsidies with extended discounts on natural gas prices for hydrogen production. Current subsidies and tax exemptions for EV purchases will be maintained until 2026, and highway toll discounts for electric and hydrogen vehicles will be extended until 2027 with gradually decreasing rates.
